About Us

Ellie’s Craft House was borne out of boredom – literally! I moved to the Outer Hebrides Mid 2019, with my husband still on the mainland sorting out our affairs there so I needed something to keep me occupied. Isle of Lewis is wild and beautiful and very rural. My nearest shop is 17 miles away though next year our village is getting a community shop so no 34 mile round trip for a bar of chocolate then!

I’d always been interested in candles and wax so decided to have a play and make some wax melts for my friends. They turned out really GOOD! My friends loved them so I made more, trying out new fragrances and moulds and colours. I tested them relentlessly for fragrance and longevity using friends and family as guinea pigs. I was amazed by their response so I was encouraged to carry on.

I did my homework on CLP labels – the labels that nobody reads but actually contain a lot of important info about Wax Melt Ingredients and warnings about possible Allergic Skin Reactions and Advice. For my wax I chose Kerax, a leading UK Wax Producer for my Wax. I currently use Kerasoy Pillar Wax as it is Biodegradable, Palm Free, Vegan Friendly and not tested on Animals.

My Fragrance oils are all from UK Companies and all are Vegan Friendly, Cruelty Free and Paraban Free. I have a small pool of currently 4 companies, that I purchase my fragrance oils from. I started off with around 18 Fragrances now I have almost 70 and its still growing.

I started a Facebook page in November 2019 and was amazed at the response I got – everyone loved my Wax Melts! With this encouraging start I involved my local Trading Standards to ensure I got things right. I Built a website which went live end January 2020. Who starts a Business at the same time as a pandemic? ME! I’d started so no point in letting the pandemic stop me. I won’t lie, it was hard work as it was just me (still is, as Im a Sole trader), making the wax melts, designing packaging, taking the photos, packing, marketing, producing new products, making the all important CLP labels, downloading, printing and filing Safety Data Sheets for every Fragrance etc etc! So much to do, but I’m loving it!

And Ellie? well she doesn’t actually exist! Before I got married my initials were L. E. My then husband to be, called me Ellie on his phone to put nosy people off the scent as we worked for the same company and we were trying to avoid the usual office gossip! So I became Ellie, a faceless name that people at work heard about but didn’t actually know much about at all – till we eventually let everyone know that I was in fact Ellie…… Hillarious!

My real name is Lorrayne, (Sunday Spelling is Lorraine) but decided to Use Ellie as it sounds so much better than Lorrayne. I’ve Trademarked Ellie’s Craft House now so it wont be changing any time soon.

I can’t thank enough, the customers who took a chance to try out an unknown company’s Products. You gave me the confidence and encouragement I needed to build my brand. Even today, 2 years on I serve those same customers and a lot more besides. Its such a privilege to have such Loyal Customers, thank you so much and keep those social media messages coming as you all know I love chatting and receiving your messages! 💗
